Subject. The relevance of this topic stems from the need to summarize and structure current understandings of artificial intelligence. There is currently enormous public interest in this phenomenon. Some researchers consider it one of the most significant achievements of scientific and technological progress in the 21st century, highlighting areas, spheres, and industries where it can be used. Others see it as a major threat, including to the labor market and national security. Purpose. To examine scholars' approaches to defining artificial intelligence, from the Middle Ages to the present day, with the goal of substantiating the possibilities and prospects for its large-scale use in public practice. Methodology. The article utilizes systemic and dialectical approaches, analysis, and synthesis, allowing us to evaluate and organize understandings of artificial intelligence as a complex and multifaceted phenomenon. Results and conclusions. It has been revealed that scientific interest in the creation of artificial intelligence is cyclical, but each new wave of attention reflects humanity's desire and need to create and implement a component that would contribute to increased labor productivity, a reduction in routine activities, and a more efficient use of available resources. Therefore, despite the contradictory and ambiguous assessment of artificial intelligence, the process of its application in public life is objective. Scope of application: the practice of organizing the effective use of artificial intelligence in various industries and in the service market.
