Abstract
Relevance. In the context of modern globalization and rapid technological advancement, the issue of sustainable development of single-industry municipalities (monotowns) has become increasingly critical for many countries. This is due to the fact that the mono-industrial specialization of monotown economies creates a high degree of vulnerability, which becomes evident during economic crises or structural transformations in their core industries. Objective. The purpose of the scientific article is to assess the diversification potential of single-industry towns in the Sverdlovsk Oblast. Methodology. The theoretical basis of the study was the consideration of different approaches to the term "Diversification", the definition of types, kinds and form of diversification. Diversification of single-industry towns is a complex and comprehensive process, and in order to determine the directions that can create space for its implementation, the authors analyzed a number of regulatory and legal acts of federal, regional, municipal levels relating to seventeen single-industry subjects of the Sverdlovsk region. Results and conclusions. The result of this analysis was the identification of the most common areas in which an assessment of the subject's potential for diversification was formed in the future. The information support of the conducted research was based on official data from the Office of the Federal State Statistics Service for the Sverdlovsk Region and the Kurgan Region. According to the results of the study, the authors identified positive dynamics in only one area — an increase in investments in fixed assets, one of the key factors for the modernization and increase of fixed assets, in the other two areas - the level of employment and the number of high-performance jobs, the dynamics is negative or biased (in the third area), due to the lack of data on the subjects of the Federation.
